Yoga is considered as the most simple and reliable mental exercise for Breast cancer patients. For cancer patients, it is very crucial to maintain their stress level under control.

Tips on Yoga

Yoga is a mind-body therapy. It involves relatively reasonable costs.

Restorative Yoga is a gentle type of yoga. It involves moving the spine in all direction. Movement should be in a more passive and gentle way. You can use cushions, bolsters, and blankets provide complete physical support. This will give total relaxation with minimal physical effort.

A research was conducted by Suzanne Danhauer, Ph.D. of Wake Forest University School of Medicine. A group of 44 women took part in the study. 22 of them took a ten week program of 75 minute Restorative Yoga (RY). Participants completed a questionnaire at the beginning and end of the ten week Restorative Yoga. They were asked to evaluate their quality of life through various measures.

After ten weeks, they were found to have gained positive difference in their mental health. Depression, positive emotions and spirituality were healthier compared to the control group. After Restorative Yoga, there was 50 percent reduction in depression. An increase of 12% was found on feelings of peace and meaning.

All the participants were breast cancer patients. 34% of the participants were actively undergoing cancer treatment. 66% already completed the treatment.

According to Dr. Suzanne Danhauer, systematic reviews of randomized trials give evidence of improvement in mood, quality of life, and treatment related symptoms.
